New lakeside restaurant, club opening on island causeway; familiar face to be host

It's been a while since Cedar Creek Lake residents could dine and entertain at a lakeside restaurant and club, but that will all change about mid-April. Coconut, a full-service restaurant and nightclub, will open in the old Beijing Garden restaurant on the causeway island along HIghway 334 between Seven Points and Gun Barrel City. Construction and remodeling is now underway. Visitors to the Coconut will see a familiar face. Lew Talbot, former owner of Cedar Isle, will be the general manager of the restaurant and club, and he is overseeing the renovation of the building. Talbot's popular restaurant and nightclub Cedar Isle burned in an accidental fire December 2012, and Cedar Creek Lake residents have missed both him and his entertainment venue ever since. Talbot said he plans for Coconut to be as popular as Cedar Isle. Boat docks will be soon be constructed at the new venue for lake residents and weekenders who want to boat in for an afternoon or evening of good food and fun. "It will be similar to what we had at Cedar Isle," Talbot said. There will be a large covered deck facing the water where visitors can dine and socialize. Coconut will be a restaurant by day and convert to a dinner nightclub at night. The food will be American, featuring seafood, steaks and sandwiches on the menu. The inside dining room and bar will be non-smoking. There will be live music with a band playing every Saturday night, just like in the old days at Cedar Isle. A large horseshoe bar will be the centerpiece of the building. By the time Coconut opens in April, it will be repainted inside and out and decorated with a lake theme. The restaurant has been vacant for about a decade. It was purchased last year by a Dallas-Fort Worth investor who hired Talbot as general manager. Talbot said he has big plans for Coconut that he believes will appeal to the lake community. "I'm going to be here for a long time," he said. Coconut will also feature a private banquet room for parties and meetings. The restaurant will have a family-friendly atmosphere. Talbot said he is excited about getting back to work entertaining lake residents, weekenders and other visitors. All of the feedback about the new operation is encouraging, he said. "Everyone is going crazy with excitement when they hear I'm going to do this," Talbot said. "We are going to have a huge summer." Fishing Report from TPWD (Apr. 2)

FAIR. stained; 61 degrees; 0.04 feet below pool. Hybrid and white bass are returning to the main lake after their annual spawning run into the creeks. These fish are now congregating on wind-blown points throughout the lake and on shallower flats near drop-offs and ledges. The shad spawn will begin in the coming weeks, which will trigger early morning schooling action along shallow points and seawalls, attracting birds to the area. To target these fish, use 1/2 ounce to 1-1/2 ounce slabs and spinnerbaits. Work the baits close to the bottom, as this will entice strikes. Thumping the bottom of the boat will also help group fish underneath as you fish these spots. The crappie bite is strong around docks, bridges, and in creeks, with minnows or jigs proving to be effective. Catfish are biting well in shallow flats at the mouths of major creeks and along adjacent points and shorelines in 2-6 feet of water. For deeper water, try anchoring or drifting with fresh shad on main lake flats in 12-24 feet. This catfish bite should remain productive for another month. Report by Brent Herbeck, Herbeck’s Lonestar Fishing Guide Service. Catfish are shallow around creek mouths drifting in 12-24 feet of water with cut shad or rough fish. Report by Jason Barber, Kings Creek Adventures.
