GUN BARREL CITY -- The Avanti Singers entertained the Rotary Club of Cedar Creek Lake with Christmas melodies at the group's regular weekly meeting at Vetoni's restaurant Dec. 14.
The club's new president, Athens Daily Review columnist Kathy Nailling, led the meeting. Nailling, who worked at the Dallas Times Herald for two decades in the advertising department, also managed the Cedar Creek Pilot until the Athens Daily Review absorbed it about 18 months ago.
Nailling took over the reigns of the Rotary Club from outgoing president Mike Moore, who is a Nationwide Insurance agent.
The performance by the Avanti Singers featured a solo by The Monitor editor Pearl Cantrell, who played a ukulele and sang a Hawaiian song. She was accompanied by a singer doing the hula.
The club also installed a new member, Dr. Lisa Jones, a veterinarian in Seven Points.
The Rotary Club, which is an international organization, aims to encourage and foster the ideas of service to the community, high ethical business standards and the advancement of international understanding, good will and peace. The club's motto is "Service Above Self."
Local events sponsored by the Rotary Club include Klothes for Kids, college scholarships, Reading is Fundamental book giveaway, Dictionary for Third-Grade Students, Mabank Good Samaritan Food Bank, library donations, Make a Difference Day, Four-Way Speech Contest, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards camp, Mabank Gold Card Luncheon and Interact Club Sponsor.
The club raised some $40,000 in 2013 for its beneficiaries.
