Gun Barrel City recently became the first community in Henderson County to receive the "Purple Heart City" designation.
Military personnel who are injured or killed in combat are awarded Purple Heart medals by the United States.
Nick Sciamini, a Vietnam War veteran who is chapter commander of Purple Heart Order No. 1935 presented a Purple Heart City sign to the Gun Barrel City Council after it passed a proclamation in support of Purple Heart recipients Oct. 28.
In addition to honoring veterans, Gun Barrel City is the planned site of a large veterans rehabilitation center to be built on vacant land behind Lowe's.
