GUN BARREL CITY -- The Rotary Club of Cedar Creek Lake is participating in the national group's 2013 speech contest for college-bound high school students.
Local members heard a speech by Eustace High School senior Dylan Huckeba, who hopes to gone on to compete at higher levels of the contest to earn a college scholarship.
The focus of the speech was Peace through Service, and Huckeba concentrated on the four principles of Rotary membership: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build good will and a better future? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
Huckeba applied the principles of the Rotary Club to the work of President Obama and other elected officials.
Other high school seniors are expected to present speeches at subsequent club meetings.
In other action this month, the local Rotary Club gave donations of $1,500 each to Tri-County Library and the Library of Cedar Creek Lake, and new member Richard Avery was inducted into the group.
The club will be sponsoring a Ladies Texas Hold-em Tournament at Comfort Suites on Feb. 2 at 5:30 p.m. The theme will be Super Bowl so participants are being asked to wear T-shirts with the logos of their favorite football team.
The group meets every Friday for lunch at Vetoni's Italian Restaurant in the banquet room at noon.
