Trips, Food & Fun Up for Auction at Library’s Most Important Fundraiser

The Library at Cedar Creek Lake hopes to raise some serious money at Denim & Diamonds V, the library's most important fundraiser of the year. The event will be held on April 27 from 5 - 10 p.m. at the Cedar Creek Country Club in Kemp. Doors open at 5 with a silent auction of dozens of items generously donated by local and DFW merchants, a $1000 putting challenge, and serious socializing. The library board and event organizers have assembled an unprecedented list of trips that will be up for bid during the live auction held during the event. Trips range from the beaches of Key West to the wine country of Napa Valley, as well as a houseboat trip on Lake Oachita, Arkansas, and travel to Boston, Washington, D.C., New Orleans, Telluride, and London. Additional "surprise destinations" will also be auctioned off. Gloria Campos of Channel 8 in Dallas will serve as Celebrity Mistress of Ceremonies. As a part-time lake resident herself, Ms. Campos has been a valuable supporter of the library in Seven Points and other local organizations. Sharing hosting duties with Gloria will be Dino "Danger" Perelli, one of the lake area's most popular hosts and entertainers, and the owner of The Venue and GBC Music in Gun Barrel City. According to Jim Taylor, chairman of this year's event, he's looking forward to welcoming first time attendees to the Denim & Diamonds event. "We have incredible supporters for the library, and we're excited to welcome new support from some of the younger families in the area who appreciate the summer programs, the children's library, and a good party," Taylor says. Guests will enjoy an elegant multi-course dinner prepared by award-winning Chef Chris Smith of the Cedar Creek Country Club. Smith's presentation will feature herbed rubbed chicken breast with a parmesan cheese sauce and braised beef tender in a petite shiraz, with a sweet potato swirl and haricots verts . Dessert will be a flavorful tres leches cake with a sweet lime mousse. Complimentary wine, beer, and soft drinks will be served throughout the evening. Taylor says this year's live and silent auctions will focus on incredible dining and travel offers, as well as sports tickets, golf packages and more. In addition to the trips already mentioned, attendees will have the chance to win dinner prepared in their home by Chef Smith, as well as a dinner by Cordon Bleu Chef Helayne Wendel. Larry and Christy Spiegel are offering a New England style clambake at their home, and the Triple N Ranch will host a "Night in Provence at Cedar Creek Lake," with dinner prepared by French Chef Francoise Olive, who will be flown in from the Luberon. An Italian wine tasting for 30 people hosted by Dan Peabody of Castello Banfi will also be part of the auction. "Deer hunters will be excited to bid on a hunter's package consisting of a fiberglass deer blind by Dillon Manufacturing of Athens, a feeder and a remote sensing camera," Taylor says. There is also a 46' Husqvarna Zero Radius riding mower up for bid, and for those with some imagination, there is even a slightly used Cadillac hearse for sale. Sponsors include Sun Commercial Roofs (Steve and Barbara Webster), Gil and Johnette Betts, the GBCEDC, Ed & Nan Creel, Larry & Christy Spiegel, Buzzy Hale, Dale & Sandy Molander, East Texas Gold & Silver, John Dees, Sue Brown, Stoneleaf Development (Mike & Vicky Sugrue), John Loar DDS, Southside Bank, Walter & Susie Weaver, Ray & Mary Adams, Elegant Concrete Surfaces (Jim Taylor). First time sponsors include Long Cove Development, Poe Motors, Shirley's Touch (Shirley Salmon), Beacon Hill, and Big Daddy's Flea Market (Larry & Shirley Hart). Cedar Creek Lake

Fishing Report from TPWD (Jan. 15)

GOOD. stained; 50 degrees; 2.61 feet below pool. The hybrid and white bass winter deadsticking bite is now in full swing! Use half ounce to 1-1/2 ounce jigs with 4-5 inch plastic flukes depending on what the winds are and drift long lengths of the lake in the deepest water 35-50 feet. Drift at speeds of .2-.6 mph using your drift mode on your trolling motor or using drift socks. If the winds are not too bad you can just drift with the wind. Thumping on the bottom of your boat will attract fish and group them up underneath as you drift. Utilizing a splasher also works well with thumping. You will find the fish suspended between 22-28 feet when deadstricking. Look for Birds and Loons early mornings on shallow flats as the fish will come up to follow the bait and feed early especially on cloudier/colder days. The crappie bite has been tough with reports of fish being scattered. Target crappie with small jigs and minnows in 7-15 feet under bridge pylons, hidden brush piles throughout the lake or under docks. Crappie fisherman have been moving spot to spot finding limits. Lots of crappies in the 7-9 inch range. Limits of crappie will happen but you may catch a lot of small ones getting to your limit. Report by Brent Herbeck, Herbeck’s Lonestar Fishing Guide Service. Still 2.7 low and water temps are in the 50 degree range give or take a degree with the clarity being stained to slightly stained heading south. The best bite is now drifting from 18 to 35' using cut shad or rough fish along the bottom. Report by Jason Barber, Kings Creek Adventures.
