3 new restaurants to open on Cedar Creek Lake north side; old favorite of lake residents, visitors reopening

CEDAR CREEK LAKE -- Three lakeside cities -- Gun Barrel City, Mabank and Seven Points -- will see the opening of new restaurants in the coming weeks. Two of the restaurants will be introducing new concepts to the lake and one will be bringing back an old favorite. The Hippie Hut Cafe and Car Hop in Mabank will be opening in mid-March while Pinky's Rock and Roll Grill in Seven Points and Extreme Bar-B-Q -- which is being reopened in a new Gun Barrel City location -- will start serving the middle of this month. All of the restaurants will serve alcoholic beverages and be open for both lunch and dinner. All of the businesses' managers note they are planning to operate family-friendly businesses. The Hippie Hut Cafe, which is being opened in Extreme Bar-B-Q's old site in Mabank on Third Street, will be serving specialty hamburgers, sandwiches and salads designed to appeal to health-conscious consumers. The restaurant's theme will be reflective of the hippie era. "We're bringing back the 60s and the 70s and Woodstock -- the good part of it," said manager Nikki Burks. "We want it to be fun in a friendly atmosphere." In addition to inside-dining the restaurant will feature carhops in the parking lot, and gazebos are being built on the grass-covered area for people who want to eat outside. Extreme Bar-B-Q, which is a tried-and-true favorite for many lake residents and visitors, is reopening in Gun Barrel City on Heritage Parkway in the strip shopping center after closing down its Mabank location last year. It is set to open Feb. 15. The new restaurant will be operated as a cafeteria, said owner Vernon Farrer. Having operated in both Seven Points and Mabank in the past, the restaurant should be more convenient for its regular customers, he said. "This is better for Cedar Creek Lake and for catching more customers," Farrer said. "It's going to be the same food and the same atmosphere." There will be Sunday dinner specials in addition to the regular barbecue menu, Farrer said. Deloney Management Group, a franchise owner of Gatti's Pizza, is now a partner in the family business, and there are plans underway to open Extreme Bar-B-Q locations across Texas, Farrer said. Deloney Management Group is owned and operated by Dallas attorney Bill Deloney and his two sons. Pinky's is also set to open Feb. 15 on Cedar Creek Parkway in the old Wings location, which is a tin building shaped to resemble an airplane hangar. It will feature large televisions for sports games watching and arcade games in a family-friendly setting. A stage for live music is planned. "We don't want to attract a rowdy crowd, but we want people to have a good time," said manager Robert Lawrence. The restaurant will feature hamburgers, sandwiches, salads and other American foods. There will be a lunch special daily. Pinky's is being opened by the owners of Sutton Produce of Kemp and Forney. Pictured below is Nikki Burks, manager of The Hippie Hut.

Cedar Creek Lake

Fishing Report from TPWD (Mar. 12)

GOOD. stained; 58 degrees; 0.10 feet above pool. The bite is consistent. The hybrid and white bass deadsticking bite will be here for just a few more weeks while the water temperature increases with the warmer weather. The white bass and hybrids will be making their run into the creek arms and will settle in along shallow points and shallower water to lay their eggs for spawning. Use half ounce to 1-1/2 ounce jigs with 4-5 inch plastic flukes depending on what the winds are and drift long lengths of the lake in 22-36 feet of water. Drift at speeds of .2-.6 mph using your drift mode on your trolling motor or using drift socks. If the winds are not too bad you can just drift with the wind. Thumping on the bottom of your boat will attract fish and group them up underneath as you drift. Utilizing a splasher also works well with thumping. Try smaller sized plastics as the bite will be smaller sized baits. Look for Birds and Loons early mornings on shallow flats as the fish will come up to follow the bait and feed early especially on cloudier and colder days. The crappie bite is on docks and in creeks with minnows or jigs. Report by Brent Herbeck, Herbeck’s Lonestar Fishing Guide Service. Still shallow around creek mouths and also drifting random depths 10-40 feet with cut shad or rough fish. Water is stained and surface temps are in the mid to.high 50's lake is full. Report by Jason Barber, Kings Creek Adventures.
